Overview
Japan has become increasingly popular for international students, with over 300,000 enrolled annually. The Japanese student visa system revolves around the Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) — a document issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau on behalf of your sponsoring institution.
Japan offers excellent research opportunities, affordable living costs outside Tokyo, and generous scholarship programs like MEXT (fully funded by the Japanese government).
Step-by-Step Process
Get University Acceptance
Apply to a Japanese university, language school, or research program. Receive your acceptance letter and enrollment documents.
Your School Applies for CoE
Your sponsoring institution applies to the Regional Immigration Bureau on your behalf. Processing takes 1–3 months. You'll receive the CoE by mail or electronically.
Apply for Student Visa at Embassy
With the CoE, visit the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your country. Submit your application with CoE, passport, photo, and application form. Processing takes 5–10 business days.
Arrive & Get Residence Card
At the airport, immigration issues your Residence Card (Zairyu Card). Register your address at the local ward office within 14 days.
