The Four Essays
Chevening requires four essays (500 words each). These are the most heavily weighted part of your application:
1. Leadership & Influence
Demonstrate leadership through specific examples. Focus on impact, not titles. Show how you influenced outcomes and led teams or initiatives. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
2. Networking
Explain how you build and maintain professional networks. How will you use the Chevening network? Show concrete examples of how networking has advanced your career or projects.
3. Study in the UK
Why the UK specifically? Why these 3 courses? How does each align with your career goals? Be specific about faculty, course modules, and university resources that attracted you.
4. Career Plan
Where are you now โ What will you study โ How will it help you โ Where will you be in 5 years? Show a clear, logical progression. Emphasize impact on your home country.
Interview Tips
- Know your essays โ Interviewers have read them and will probe deeper
- UK current affairs โ Understand UK politics, economy, and foreign policy relevant to your country
- Be concrete โ Have specific 5-year career plans with intermediary milestones
- Show passion, not desperation โ Demonstrate that you have options but prefer Chevening
- Practice the "why UK" question โ Not just "good universities" but specific advantages
